Tournament time in Central Alabama has finally arrived! The crew of your Regional Tournament is ready to greet and meet you for the March 4, 2016 Tournament. We invite you to read carefully all the following information so that your team will have the best tournament experience ever. Please join us in urging each of your team members to have a great and safe day while always remembering to show consideration and respect for the facilities and campus of Helena Middle School.

The Tournament Entrance is at the back of the school. There are roads on both sides of the building that lead to the rear parking lot and school entrance. If you turn into the Front Office parking lot, you will not be able to get to the back of the school without getting back out on Hillsboro Parkway.


Team Managers should begin their tournament day by going to the Registration Table. The registration area easily becomes congested and this can keep the team from being registered on time, so please do not bring your team with you to the Registration Table. If your team’s Team Challenge performance is first thing in the morning, team members and helpers can begin the unloading of props. If your team’s Instant Challenge is scheduled first, the team members can simply get oriented around the school or can start getting mentally prepped for Instant Challenge while registration is being completed. Please make prior arrangements with everyone attending with your team to join you away from the Registration Table but on campus to gather together and get the most up-to-date information for your tournament day!


The best way to enter the Helena Middle School is through the back entrance of the school. You can bring your props inside and then take them to one of the hallways designated for Prop Storage. Please move vehicles to the parking area on the opposite side of the building after all props are unloaded. Because props will be stored in hallways, someone will need be with them in order to ensure that they are not inadvertently damaged. We do not recommend unloading props more than 90 minutes ahead of your team’s scheduled Performance Time. Once your team’s Performance is done, please be prepared to re-load them into the cars soon after so that other teams can unload their props/scenery. There simply isn’t enough room for everyone’s props to be in the Prop Storage areas all at once.

Teams should be prepared to fit their props/scenery/etc. through single-width doors, even if double-width doors are available.


Your team should report to their Team Challenge site no later than 20 minutes prior to its scheduled performance time.  On the detailed Tournament Schedule we’ve listed the Prep Area times for your team.  The Prep Area is where most paperwork will be turned in.  The Prep Area Appraiser will talk with the team and get them prepared to enter the Performance site.
The Prep Area is not the appropriate place for last-minute repairs, etc.  Once at the Prep Area, the team should give their attention to the Prep Area Appraiser so they can get your team ready to go for their performance time.


On the schedule is a time that your team should Check-In at the Instant Challenge Check-In Table.  Please have your team there and present on time so we can keep the schedule moving. Be sure to have a copy of your team’s Instant Challenge Promise (to be released shortly) ready to hand in at the Instant Challenge Check-In.  The Instant Challenge portion of the competition is not open to the public – only the team and ONE Team Manager will be taken back to the Instant Challenge Room.  The hallway beyond the Instant Challenge Check-In table is off limits to everyone else.


After your team completes all aspects of their competition or during breaks between Challenges, we invite them to enjoy the day and support other teams!

Tournament programs (including maps and complete schedule) will be available at the Registration Table. There will be volunteers familiar with the building and with DI at this table throughout the day to answer general questions and contact the Tournament Director if needed. If you need first aid assistance, we will have basic first aid supplies available at the Information table.

If you, your team, or your guests are looking for a place to sit and gather, the Cafeteria is going to be open and available all day for teams and guests and, if the weather permits, the courtyard areas will also be a great place to enjoy some “letting off steam” time!

CONCESSIONS9:00 AM – 1:30 PM, Cafeteria

SNACKS: Helena Middle DI is offering concessions for sale in the Cafeteria. Stop by and grab a quick something to satisfy any sudden hunger or thirst, all the while supporting the people who have been so gracious to host our Tournament. All snacks, drinks, etc. will be $1.

LUNCH: There are several options for lunch:

  • Pizza: Helena Middle DI will have slices of pizza on sale at concessions for $1 per slice from 11:30am-1:30pm
  • Off-Site: If your team has time and wishes to go off-campus for lunch, there are several restaurants about 1.5 miles from HMS, including Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Hungry Howie’s, and Jack’s. Please be sure to be back for the Awards Ceremony which starts at 2:30 PM.


Team Managers: Approximately 30 min after your team finishes their Team Challenge performance, your team’s raw scores should be available to pick up at your performance site.  In order to pick these up, the Challenge Master can meet with, and ONLY with, one team member and one Team Manager.  The Challenge Master will review the scores with these two individuals and then hand the scores to them.  At that point, the Team Manager and team member can take the scores back to their team to look them over as a group.  We suggest you find a place where your team can be alone to talk about how they did. Of course, your team will have a great time reading all the sticky notes and building on your successes for next time!

All final scores (including Instant Challenge and scaled Team Challenge scores) will be posted in the gym and auditorium lobbies immediately after the Awards Ceremony – please bring paper and pencil to copy scores, or take a picture with your phone – do NOT take scores off the wall! We will also try to post scores online within 24 hours!

Team managers – please review the procedures for Appeals in the event you are unsure about your Challenge scores. The Challenge Master of each challenge will be at our Tournament to help interpret scores and explain them fully.

HALFTIME2:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Between the end of competition and the Awards Ceremony is a short break for teams to catch their breath, buy concessions or souvenirs, and just enjoy time together celebrating all you’ve achieved at the tournament. While we highly suggest teams stick around and mingle with other teams and enjoy the day, if you need to leave the tournament site, please make sure you’re back in time for the Awards Ceremony.


If you and/or your team members leave campus, please make sure that everyone is in the Cafeteria by 2:30 PM for a great time celebrating all the work teams have put into this DI season!

As a final reminder:

  • Be SURE to have all paperwork ready and COPIED — copy machines are not available at Helena Middle School!
  • Read over the Rules of the Road once more to make sure your team has followed all the rules, especially those regarding the Expense Report, Safety, and Interference.
